In time for spring break, US airports are upping security checks

RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) – Some eyebrows are being raised following changes to how security officers will perform pat-downs at airports across the US. Enhanced security measures are being rolled out just in time for spring break.

Major airports across Canada are preparing for March break madness with tens of thousands of passengers expected to pass through terminals with many heading to the US. However, there’s a warning to passengers that pat-downs for those travelling stateside are about to get more hands on.

“When they get aggressive, and I’ve had that experience, I think it’s an invasion of my privacy,” says one woman.

Others are taking to social media, calling the new system “legalized groping.”

One American aviation consultant says it’s going to be the same experience for everyone selected by agents. He says the more invasive screening will be more thorough and the downside of that is how much more of people’s personal privacy will be given up.

The procedure change comes after the Transportation Security Administration failed to detect fake firearms smuggled through security 95 per cent of the time during a recent audit by Homeland Security.
