Conservatives warn of tax hikes as Ottawa prepares to unveil latest budget

OTTAWA, ON. (NEWS 1130) – The federal opposition Conservatives are out with several warnings before the Trudeau government unveils its second budget tomorrow.

“Canadians are anxious about this budget,” says Conservative Leader Rona Ambrose who’s concerned about the Liberal economic plan, claiming we could see hikes in capital gains and other taxes. “Justin Trudeau has racked up the credit card and now he needs money to pay the bill. Business people and families are feeling it. They know more taxes are coming.”

However, there are some reports this will largely be a stay-the-course budget and this time around the federal Liberals will not be making major tax changes or privatizing airports, which could bring the government billions of dollars in revenue at a time of deep deficits.

Ambrose points out the federal government still hasn’t ruled the options out for the future, and is worried Ottawa will sell off strategic public assets to make a quick buck while private companies raise costs on Canadians.

When pressed by reporters on Parliament Hill today, Finance Minister Bill Morneau said little about what could come out tomorrow. He quickly walked past the media saying, “I look forward to speaking to all of you tomorrow.”

The Conservatives have put forward an opposition motion calling on the federal government not to raise taxes, or sell airports, while demanding they balance the budget by 2019 as the Liberals promised during the last election.

NEWS 1130 will have a team of reporters covering the budget tomorrow and we’ll have extensive coverage both on-air and online.
