TERRACE (NEWS 1130) – A snowmobiler owes his life to the quick actions of five rescuers after he was caught in an avalanche more than 40 kilometres north of Terrace.
Dave Jephson with local Search and Rescue says two groups of snowmobilers were in the Rosswood area yesterday when they saw the sledder pass them “and start to head up one of the chutes that everybody uses to access the top of the mountain.
“While sitting at the bottom down in the creek area, they witnessed the avalanche start, which they believe was triggered by the individual,” he explains.
The snow fractured around the lone sledder and engulfed him. He wasn’t wearing a locator beacon, so the five snowmobilers used probes to try to pinpoint his location.
Jephson says they found him buried under a metre of snow but were able to dig him out in time.
