North Vancouver plaza project gets underway

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – You may notice a little more traffic along the waterfront in North Vancouver starting tomorrow.

The city is developing an old industrial site into a people-oriented public plaza, complete with a new hotel and restaurants.

The Site Five Shipyards project at the foot of Lonsdale will also include an outdoor activity area, which will double as a covered skating rink in the winter months and an outdoor waterpark during the hot summers.

The project is expected to take a little under two years to complete, which means there will be some necessary roadwork. But Mayor Darrell Mussatto says the city’s doing what it can to keep impact on drivers to a minimum.

“Roads need to be resurfaced and we’ll be putting in a turnaround at the bottom of Lonsdale so it makes it easier to enter the site, as well as keeping Spirit Trail running right through the entire site so you can get one side of the city to the other along the waterfront.”

He hopes the new outdoor plaza will attract people from across the region, and says the development will add to current outdoor attractions in North Vancouver, like the Friday night markets.
