Missing Hall of Fame trophy returned after taken for a trip

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Relief at the BC Sports Hall of Fame.

A trophy that went missing during a banquet at the Vancouver Convention Centre on Wednesday was returned Sunday afternoon.

An anonymous call was made to Global TV, and it was turned over by a man to one of their reporters at the Hall of Fame headquarters at BC Place.

Curator Jason Beck says it appears it was a bit of a prank.

“There were a couple guests at the dinner who maybe had too much to drink. They decided to take one of the trophies with them. They thought it was a table centrepiece and they were allowed to take it, which absolutely was not the case.”

In fact, the MCs at the function stressed to guests several times they were not to bring the trophies home.

He understands the 80-year-old trophy was then taken on a bit of a joy ride around the Lower Mainland, with its picture taken along the way.

He says the hall won’t pursue criminal charges.

“We’re just happy that the trophy is back and in good condition. We could have done without the stress over the Easter weekend. We devoted a lot of time for this to track it down.”

The Vancouver City Combined Ski Championship Challenge cup was designed to be awarded to local skiers decades ago.
