Kaslo homes evacuated after mudslide

KASLO (NEWS 1130) – Almost 50 properties have been evacuated around Kaslo in the south-eastern part of the province after a mudslide. Experts continue to assess the area for stability.

Bronwen Bird from the Regional District of Central Kootenay says it’s unclear when the few dozen people told to leave the area will be able to return to their homes.

“There was a small slide that occurred above a road called Zwicky Rd, it runs parallel to the highway that goes between Kaslo and New Denver. So in an abundance of caution we decided to issue a state of local emergency and an evacuation order.”

“RDCK emergency staff as well as geotechnical engineers, they did a flyover in a helicopter just to take a look at the slide and they went out onto the slide today to assess it. And we’re still waiting to hear back exactly what their findings were.”

Nobody was hurt in the mudslide and no homes were damaged. The decision to evacuate was made as a precaution.
