Winter weather causes drop in Vancouver Sun Run entries: race director

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Rain has only slightly dampened the spirits of the 40,000 people who took part in the Vancouver Sun Run today.

Joseph Gray was the first across the finish line in the annual 10km race, which started at 9am. The US athlete clocked in with a time of 29 minutes and 38 seconds.

The woman with the best finish was Karolina Jarzynska-Nadolska of Poland, who made it across with a time of 32 minutes and 39 seconds.

Race director Tim Hopkins says the race saw a slight drop in registration this year.

“We are a little bit down from our total of last year, we were around 43,000 at event day. I think a lot of it has a do with the challenges we’ve had around weather.”

He says all the snow earlier this year made it harder for runners to train for the event, although registration has been down for the past few years.

“We’ve been over 50,000 (registrations) a number of times. The last five years we’ve been hovering around the 40,000 number. 40,000-plus will still (make i) the largest race in Canada and the top five 10kms in North America.”

Road closures were in place for the race, which saw runners head into Stanley Park, over the Burrard Street Bridge, back over the Cambie Street Bridge and into BC Place.
