Pattullo will be replaced regardless of election outcome: TransLink CEO

By

NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS 1130) – The man in charge of most Lower Mainland transit service is confident the aging Pattullo Bridge will get replaced, regardless of who wins the May 9th provincial election.

And TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond hopes construction begins soon.

Desmond says all three parties have promised to fund at least one-third of the costs involved. “Well, the Pattullo Bridge is our highest infrastructure priority at TransLink. It is close to beyond its useful life. Whatever the new government is on May 10th that will also be at the very top of our list.”

Earlier this week, Metro Vancouver mayors released a voters’ guide suggesting the New Democrats are the best choice for local commuters, but Desmond isn’t so sure and won’t comment further. “You can look at the three party platforms. I will leave it there. The former government has said publicly numerous times that they would fund one-third of the project going forward.”

He feels it doesn’t matter who is in power on May 10th — the aging bridge, which has undergone ongoing repairs, has to be replaced with a new crossing. “That is our top infrastructure priority — absolutely. It has to be replaced. We have heard commitments from all three parties to help finance the bridge, so we will commence those discussions on day one.”

Desmond says he wants to replace that bridge by the beginning of 2023
