Arrest over possible Nanaimo hate crime

NANAIMO (NEWS 1130) – Nanaimo RCMP say a man they’ve arrested in connection with a brutal assault at a Nanaimo hotel on Thursday may have been motivated by hate.

The victim, a businessman staying in Nanaimo, was assaulted and tied up in a hotel room. He was also threatened and had some property stolen. He was so badly injured he was taken to the hospital.

RCMP say the suspect was arrested at a mall in Nanaimo. 28-year-old Gabriel Nelson has been charged with aggravated assault and forcible confinement.

“Our investigation is continuing and will include looking at what may have motivated this assault,” says Corporal Jon Stuart of the Nanaimo RCMP.

The RCMP points out if a victim is targeted because of factors such as ethnicity or sexual orientation, the offence may be deemed a hate crime.
