VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – As the search for new sources of environmentally friendly energy continues, University of Victoria engineers are suggesting we look to the power of the sea.
Harnessing the power of waves can offer a more consistent source of energy than wind or the sun, which can’t generate power on calm or cloudy days.
An academic has helped put together a document suggesting British Columbia is well positioned to take a leading role in developing wave energy. There are calls for the government to outline laws and rules around the technology to encourage companies to invest in it in BC.
Research engineer Bryson Robertson feels BC’s contoured coastline creates the ideal place to experiment with and develop the technology.
“Our mandate as a research group is to understand the value proposition for wave energy in British Columbia, or in Canada for that matter.”
“You know we can do a huge amount of work at University to help them along their development pathway through some really high end numerical models, through some detailed understanding of things.”
Wave-capturing devices can be large steel paddles on the ocean floor, or tethered buoys.
