VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Vancouver’s Mayor wants a commitment for help with housing from the provincial parties.

“We have to see more support from the BC government going forward from housing. All the parties need to be pressured on this. It’s the number one concern of most residents here,” says Gregor Robertson.

He says what’s needed is a change in tone.

“We’re seeing certainly, the NDP and the Green Party speaking more to housing as a key priority. And hopefully, that pressures the BC Liberals to step up and make more commitments as the campaign progresses.”

When asked about specifics, he pointed to those struggling to pay the bills.

“Freezing income assistance rates, which has resulted in a deplorable impact for people on fixed incomes. As the price of housing goes up, they have no more money from income assistance to deal with that.”

He says homelessness and rental controls are other areas that need to be addressed.
