Elderly man missing after mudslide near Salmon Arm

SALMON ARM (NEWS 1130) – An elderly man is missing following an overnight mudslide in the southern Interior of British Columbia.

RCMP say local fire officials responded to the slide in the community of Tappen, north of Salmon Arm, on Saturday.

One home was completely enveloped by the slide with others possibly being partially damaged.

In a news release, Cpl. Dan Moskaluk says family members confirmed the 76-year-old man was last known to be inside the home that was buried in the slide and he has yet to be located.

The Salmon RCMP has activated resources from the Shuswap Search and Rescue Team, Tappen and Salmon Arm Fire Departments. As of this morning the Columbia Shuswap Regional District representatives began assessing the situation in order to safely access and make entry into the home to search for the man.

Police say tactical evacuations of several residences are complete and road access to approximately 100 homes has been blocked as a result of the slide.
