‘Empty The Tanks’ protest set for tomorrow

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – You’ll see more than sea otters, seals and sea lions at the Vancouver Aquarium tomorrow.

Protestors plan to be there from noon until 2:00 pm as part of a worldwide “Empty the Tanks” demonstration.

They want to offer their support to the Vancouver Park Board for moving ahead with a bylaw banning whales and dolphins from being held in capivity.

Organizers also say they hope to see the move repeated at facilities around the world.

The Vancouver Aquarium is claiming it has overwhelming public support for rescuing and rehabilitating injured and sick cetaceans.

Critics of the marine centre have cited the deaths of two beluga whales last year as a tipping point in the conversation.

Qila and Aurora died within weeks of each other and while we know a toxin was involved in the deaths, we don’t know what it was or where it came from.
