How to avoid a cyber attack

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A local security strategist says Canada is lucky to have been missed in the massive cyber attack that temporarily crippled global networks on Friday.

A massive ransomware attack affected 200,000 computers in more than 150 countries, including one in five health trusts in the UK.

So how can people and organizations protect themselves against such attacks?

Dominic Vogel, chief security strategist with Cyber.SC says it’s like good hygiene – keep your computer clean and safe.

“There’s some real basic things that the vast majority of people in the consumer world and the vast majority of organizations in the business world aren’t doing. So when these things happen… to me, it’s a self-inflicted wound.”

He says it’s about keeping on top of things.

“When we’re talking about applying security patch, when Microsoft, your Windows operating system pops up saying patches need to be applied, people tend to ignore them. When we see them, we should take the time and apply those right away.”
