Whitecaps return home to battle Sporting KC

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) –  For the first time since April 14th, the Vancouver Whitecaps (4-5-1, 6th in the West) are back on the turf at BC Place – but the test is still stiff, as the best club in the conference, Sporting Kansas City (6-2-4, 1st in the West) is in town. (4pm)

Saturday afternoon’s matchup marks the first of two meetings this season between the two teams – Sporting KC won the MLS season series a year ago, but the Whitecaps took both Champions League group stage matches a year ago.

Vancouver posted a respectable six points on the four game swing away from BC Place, and now’s the time to get something going in the standings with five of the next six at home. That includes Tuesday’s Canadian Championship match with Montreal.

“I think the boys are playing with great confidence at the moment.” Whitecaps head coach Carl Robinson said earlier this week.

“If you review the last four (road) games we’ve had, the two best performances that we’ve played – we haven’t taken any points in Portland and (Houston).”

“I’ve challenged (the players) to be good every day, and put that into play in games, and they’ve done that.”

Brek Shea has certainly ‘been good’ since returning from injury, having scored goals in consecutive games, part of a three match goal scoring streak overall.

It might be tricky trying to solve SKC ‘keeper Tim Melia, however. He leads MLS with seven clean sheets, and his individual matchup with Vancouver’s David Ousted may decide this match.
