Record number of cruise ship passengers expected this weekend

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – You might notice a little more foot traffic than usual in Vancouver this weekend.

The city is expecting a record number of cruise ship passengers at Canada Place today, which may make navigating through the downtown core a little harder.

Close to 16,000 people are estimated to be coming off the Emerald Princess, Star Princess and Nieuw Amsterdam today.

The VPD is directing traffic to help with the congestion.

Over the course of this year, more than 800,000 cruise ship passengers will be stopping through Vancouver – about two per cent more than the city welcomed last year.

Ferry terminals busy this long weekend

There have been sailing waits on the major ferry routes, including Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay. To help with the extra volume, more than 85 extra sailings have been added this long weekend.

Deborah Marshall with BC Ferries says Tsawwassen and Horseshoe Bay are expected to be the busiest terminals today, and that will last until about midday tomorrow.

“If you’re travelling without a reservation, I would suggest to check out our current conditions on our website. We also have a calendar of the busiest travel times for the long weekend on our website. That’s a very good tool to check out before you head to the terminals.”

Marshall adds the Vancouver Island and Langdale terminals are expected to pick up on Monday afternoon.
