VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Property crime in Vancouver is up just over 9 percent from 2015 to 2016, according to data released by the Vancouver Police Department.
Thieves are keen on smashing car windows or trying door handles to steal valuables inside, said Staff Sgt. Randy Fincham, who adds theft from auto remains very high in the city.
He hopes reaching out to the community will help tamp down these numbers, and is warning people to be more attentive and not leave anything valuable in their car.
“A lot of time, this is people leaving unattended property inside a vehicle, and someone takes the opportunity to walk away with what’s inside,” Fincham said.
But this type of crime affecting Vancouver. Other property crimes, such as arson and fraud, were about the same between 2015 and 2016, while crimes like breaking and entering were slightly lower.
Violent crime is down nearly 3 percent over that same period, while traffic crime rates were slightly up.
