Warm weather warning for parents with young children

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A cool breeze blowing through your home can keep it pleasant as warm weather moves in, but parents are being warned of a real danger for young children.

Dr. Ash Singhal with the BC Children’s Hospital says he’s seen everything from scrapes to life-threatening brain damage from children falling from windows or balconies, and has seen a significant number of cases over the last five years.

“We’ve seen over 170 injuries of that type,” says Singhal, who adds it’s easy for curious kids to find themselves in trouble

“That curiosity sometimes leads them to lean out of windows that are open to drag furniture on to balconies or up against windows and make their way through a window,” he says.

He says you need to pay attention, and take extra measures if you want to keep your loved ones safe.

“Screens are designed to keep bugs out, they’re not designed to keep children in.”

He says an easy thing to use as a parent when you’re trying to figure out how wide a window can open is the size of your adult fist.

He recommends installing a safety device that will limit the opening to ensure a child’s head can’t get through.
