Demonstrators call for ban on sale of cats and dogs in Vancouver stores

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A peaceful demonstration in Vancouver today is pushing for a ban on the sales of cats and dogs in stores in the city.

Paws for Hope” members are gathering outside “Granville Pet and Garden” in Marpole to send a message.

Executive Director Kathy Powelson says there is a misconception that a ban is already in place.

“Many people in Vancouver assumed that there was a ban. Many people thought that the Richmond ban that happened in 2010, which banned the sale of puppies, was a provincial ban, and it’s not.”

She says she her group has been trying to get a ban in place for years.

“We have been in touch with the City to talk about introducing a motion to ban the retail sale of cats, dogs and rabbit, so this type of business cannot happen in Vancouver.”

Powelson claims the dogs sold at “Granville Pet and Garden” are sourced from puppy mills in the US and South Korea.

The demonstration runs from noon to 4:00 p.m. at 8697 Granville Street.
