New push for campaigns against sugary drinks in BC

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – You could start to see campaigns directed at those who enjoy sugary drinks if the Surrey Board of Trade convinces the provincial government to embrace a new policy.

Board chief executive Anita Hubberman says the group wants the provincial government to examine options for better labels, public campaigns and school campaigns to help people make healthier choices.

“And maybe even going as far as mandating warning labels on sugary drinks.”

The policy has been presented to the BC Chamber of Commerce, not for the first time, but with some modifications.

Hubberman says health and business are linked, which is why the organization is making this ask.

“We’re looking at our future workplace what we want it to look like, and we’re wanting to implement healthy living.”

“We’re looking at reducing healthcare costs, improving workplace productivity and reducing absenteeism among other things.”

The Surrey Board of Trade has presented a policy focused on sugary drinks before. The original request included a tax on sugary drinks, but Hubberman says that wasn’t “palatable” for many businesses representatives, so the proposal was removed this time around.

The possibility of a tax has been proposed federally.
