NDP, Greens deliver power-sharing deal to lieutenant governor

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – Just one day after signing a historic alliance, the leaders of the BC Green Party and BC NDP are taking things one step further.

John Horgan and Andrew Weaver delivered their power-sharing agreement to Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon in Victoria this morning. This as the partnership outlines its proposal to replace the BC Liberals.

NEWS 1130 asked Adam Olsen, who will soon represent Saanich North and the Islands for the Green Party, about the agreement which would give the NDP-Green partnership a one-seat edge in the Legislature, if he believes the deal can hold up for four years. “I think the people of BC are going to get very good value out of their Legislature. Certainly everybody will be in attendance and working to advance good public policy.”

When asked about the possibility of an NDP MLA crossing the floor to the BC Liberals, Olsen said that’s not something he has thought about — saying from his perspective the NDP caucus appears to be united.

“I think that they’ve put their names on the paper,” Olsen says of the power-sharing deal signed this week. “It’s important that we follow through with this. At this stage I have no concerns about that.”

The deal between the two parties covers a great deal of ground, including a move to eliminate bridge tolls, more funding for public education, and a commitment to take a second look at the $8 billion Site C dam. However, it doesn’t mention anything about ride-hailing services, like Uber, which the BC Liberals had promised to legalize by this December.
