Save your change, TransLink fares are going up

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Your wallet will soon feel a little lighter as a fare hike for TransLink will go into effect on July 1st.

The transit authority says single-ride fares will go up between five to 10 cents as of Canada Day. This is the first price hike since 2013.

This hike shouldn’t come as a surprise. It was announced back in November as part of the Phase 1 of the Mayors’ Council 10-year transit plan for the region and it was approved by the TransLink board of directors a couple of months ago.

TransLink says throughout the month of June it will provide more information for customers about how the changes will impact them.

  • Single-use concession fares will go up five cents and single-use adult fares will jump by 10 cents (including HandyDART)
  • DayPass fares will increase by 25 cents
  • Monthly pass fares will increase between $1 and $2, depending on the zone type
  • Fares for one, two and three-zone products will all increase by the same amount (including the West Coast Express.

Revenue from increased fares will be used pay for improvements for buses, SkyTrain service, HandyDART and the SeaBus. The transit authority says that includes an extra 65,000 bus service hours, upping Canada Line passenger capacity during peak hours and extending midday and evening weekend service on the Expo and Millennium Lines.
