Alcohol sales may soon be allowed in Vancouver grocery stores

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Liquor policies might soon be changed to allow the sale of alcohol in Vancouver grocery stores, as well as cultural venues including museums and art galleries.

The city’s Chief License Inspector, Kathryn Holm, says proposed changes have been under review since provincial liquor regulations were relaxed in 2014.

“Strike a balance between supporting local economy and the vibrancy of the city and also the social and public health concerns and implications that liquor has on our city. …We’ve been conducting a comprehensive policy review — partly in response to the provincial directives and also in response to feedback we were hearing around our policies and an opportunity to really re-examine and streamline our internal processes.”

The report goes before council on June 14th.

More than a dozen stores in other cities now sell wine. Most are in Surrey or the Kelowna area.
