Search teams urging common sense for hikers

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Local search volunteers are again offering up common sense advice for anyone heading outdoors this weekend.

Mike Danks, the team leader for North Shore Rescue, says it’s important to not overdo it, warning some hikers might be taking on more than they can handle.

“Just with the nicer weather that’s coming, we really encourage people to start out their hikes with a moderate hike. Not an extreme hike right off the bat. Just make sure it’s appropriate to your fitness level.”

Mike Danks says the most important thing for anyone heading into the wilderness is to make sure friends or family know exactly where they’re going.

“Leave a note saying what time they’re expected back and when somebody should call for help. That really highlights the importance of doing that.”

He’s also reminding adventure-seekers to avoid wandering off the beaten path.

“By no means do we want people to be going off the trails into areas not safe for people to travel in.”
