BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – Two minors on the Whitecaps’ development team have been charged with sexual assault after an incident at the team’s Burnaby training facility last week.
The Whitecaps organization doesn’t go into specifics in a statement it has released, only saying the conduct of the two young males was clearly in contravention of club codes of conduct.
The club says the safety and well being of players is their top priority and they have been cooperating fully with the RCMP investigation.
The two players have been suspended from the club.
Vancouver criminal lawyer Michael Shapray says there’s unlikely to be much more public information about the case in the immediate future, because things are at such an early stage.
“Like any case where charges are just being recommended by the police, we don’t much about them yet at all,” he says.
“We have the additional factor in this case of the accused people being under the age of 18, and therefore protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. So we will not learn their names and the details of this case will remain much more under wraps as well.”
