Special weather statement in effect for Metro Vancouver and surrounding areas

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A special weather statement is now in effect because of the heat we are expected to see in the next few days.

It’s in place for Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, Howe Sound, Whistler, and Inland Vancouver Island.

Temperatures are expected to hit at least 32 degrees Celsius away from the water.

Environment Canada expects some daily records to be broken Saturday or Sunday.

Temperatures are expected to moderate on Monday as an onshore flow of cooler, marine air develops.

Doctor Meena Dawar with Vancouver Coastal Health says the hotter temperatures mean you should stay hydrated, cool and wear sunscreen.

“So this is a great time to head out to a beach or a shady area in your neighbourhood, and also check in on others. Family members who may be living by themselves and may not recognize that they’re at risk of heat-related illness.”

She’s also reminding parents not to leave their children in cars.

“So that’s really important, children are at greater risk of heat-related illness, because of their large surface area compared to their body mass.”

Symptoms of heat-related illness include weakness, confusion, dizziness and fainting.

BC Hydro is expecting power usage to surge thanks to the heat. Mora Scott says the increase is generally because people are turning up their air conditioners and fans.

She has some suggestions for staying cool and saving money.

“We recommend shading your windows, that can block up to 65 per cent of the heat from entering your home. We also suggest using a ceiling fan, they’re the most energy efficient option for cooling. They use about one-tenth of the energy that an air conditioner uses.”
