Fewer British Columbians heading south because of Trump: poll

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A year or two ago the biggest deterrent for British Columbians halting any cross-border travel plans was the low loonie.

There’s no doubt it’s still a setback, but Mario Canseco with Insights West says there’s been a notable change. “This time around, the main motivation for British Columbians not to go to the United States is the political situation. We find there are more British Columbians who say they have changed their plans for travelling to the United States because of the current political climate, more than anywhere else in Canada.”

Canseco adds having Donald Trump in the White House is hurting the chances of having folks from BC heading south.

“Especially after the last US election we asked whether Canadians would be more likely or less likely to go to the United States and we found a similar situation, essentially British Columbians saying they were more likely to cancel plans or not to go to the US. Tracking before the US election we saw BC as the one place where most people didn’t really want to see Donald Trump be president and it’s no surprise now that we have people acting on it.”

The same poll shows Vancouver and Victoria rank among the favourite travel destinations for Canadians, but because of the 150th birthday celebrations in Ottawa — the majority of people in this country are planning trips in the east. Other popular cities to visit in Eastern Canada, according to Insights West, are Toronto and Montreal.
