Many questions about Christy Clark’s future as BC Liberals fall

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – We finally have some answers to what will happen in Victoria. While we know the NDP and Greens will lead the province for now, there are questions about what will happen across the aisle.

“The Liberals are in a bit of a tricky spot,” says SFU Political Scientist David Moscrop, who adds with a weak Green-NDP government, a change in leadership might not be the best idea. “There have been leaders who resign their leadership but hung on.”

Christy Clark’s vote in the legislature will be integral with such a close seat count, but she does have the choice to resign as leader and keep her seat as an MLA. “In the midst of all of this, I think that point has been lost. You would have to call a by-election then and you certainly risk a seat.”
Moscrop adds the Liberals may want her to stay on as leader until the next election.

The BC NDP will now form government and Leader John Horgan will become BC’s 36th premier, after Clark and company fell in a non-confidence vote on Thursday afternoon. A new alliance by the New Democrats and Green parties defeated the Liberals in the legislature by a vote of 44-42.

However, an NDP government faces a lot of hurdles, because even with the support of the three Green members of the Legislature, the New Democrats can only count on 44 votes in the 87-seat House, putting them in a precarious position.

The legislature isn’t expected to be recalled until after the Labour Day long weekend.

Following the provincial election on May 9th, the Liberals had 43 seats, the NDP 41 and the Greens three.
