ABBOTSFORD (NEWS 1130) – The driver who is accused of dragging an Abbotsford police officer for about a block Saturday morning had an outstanding warrant for prohibited driving.
The unnamed police officer escaped with only minor injuries.
Sergeant Judy Bird says it all started when an officer pulled the driver over at Bevan Avenue and Ware Street at around 8:30 a.m.
“He found that the driver’s behaviour was suspicious, which was part of the reason why the driver was pulled over. The officer was cognizant of the fact that the driver was acting strangely.”
She says the driver refused to turn the engine off, then drove away, with the officer clinging to the driver.
“So the officer was dragged about a block. He then was able to climb into the car. While in the car, there was a short physical altercation and he was able to jump out of the vehicle a few moments later.”
But the driver kept on going. Officers ended their chase after about eight blocks, while the driver continued to travel along Highway 11 and Highway 1. He ended up in Yarrow about an hour later where he was once again pulled over by officers, this time complying.
The 33-year-old driver could be charged with several offences, including flight from police, dangerous driving, assault with a weapon, assaulting a police officer, and driving while prohibited.
