Transit Police reports few issues during Canada Day

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – You may have faced some major waits if you were trying to get on the SkyTrain or catch a bus out of downtown after Canada Day celebrations yesterday.

But Transit Police reports things went relatively smoothly and they are already preparing for the next set of events.

Anne Drennan with the agency says the crowd around Canada Place was estimated to be between 350,000 and 400,000 people.

She explains despite the crowds, there were actually no major issues. “Overall, things went very well considering the number of people that were using the system,” she said.

“Having said that, after a major incident like this there is always a review that is done to see whether or not we can do things better.”

The Celebration of Light fireworks are coming up in August, and despite not running into any big hiccups this Canada Day, Drennan says officers are always learning from past events in order to ensure the best service going forward.

Vancouver Police say some of the notable incidents they dealt with were:

  • one person arrested for being too intoxicated in a public place
  • two people arrested for breach of the peace and later released
  • about 80 liquor pour-outs took place at various locations, with the exception of Canada Place where they were no pour-outs

“The crowds were patient and generally well-behaved,” says VPD Constable Jason Doucette. “I guess you could say they were very Canadian.”
