BC’s new premier putting together his inner circle

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – He won’t officially become Premier until later this month, but speculation is already rampant about who’ll make up John Horgan’s cabinet.

History was made Thursday night when Christy Clark became the first premier to be defeated in the BC legislature and the Lieutenant Governor asked the NDP leader to form government.

Former party leader Carole James, who’s been the Opposition critic for finance until now, says it’s up to Horgan to decide if she’ll become the province’s next finance minister.

“Each of us as MLA’s have had our opportunity to talk to John about our strengths and what we feel we can offer the team, but I’m sure, most people, as I did, have said that we’re there to serve. It’s up to the Premier to make the decisions and we’ll be hearing that in the next few weeks,” she says.

“I’ve told John that’s his choice, he’s the one who has to make the tough calls. He’ll be making all of those decisions about who goes in to Cabinet and who doesn’t. I certainly am looking forward to hard work, whatever file I end up getting.”

One thing James can confirm is that none of the three Green Party MLA’s will be cabinet ministers.

“They were very clear in our negotiations. They were not interested in sitting in government. We have an agreement, not a coalition. They will certainly be involved in being consulted, providing their advice.”

Horgan is expected to be sworn in later this month.

James says more details about the transition will be released as the week goes on.
