Air crews tackling new fire at Harrison Lake

HARRISON LAKE (NEWS 1130) – British Columbia’s fire crews have a new blaze on their hands, after flames started on the eastern side of Harrison Lake late on Saturday.

The Slollicum Creek fire is about 20 hectares in size, making it one of the smaller fires in the province.

Fire Information Officer Jessica Poustie says the fire was reported on Saturday night and crews will be on scene for the next few days.

“My understanding right now is that, the size of the fire and the location of it, there’s no threats to any of the… homes in the area. And crews are working on containment.”

Lisa Free is about 15 kilometres north of the village of Harrison Hot Springs and can see the fire.

“There were a couple of helicopters up here, they’ve since left the area but there are five other planes up here. At least a couple that are dropping retardants right now,” she says.

“It’s not massive, but it’s certainly active.”

She says the wind is quite calm and white smoke is mostly going north. She says there are still a few boats on the lake.

Another fire is burning about 30 kilometres north of Harrison Hot Springs, near the mouth of Big Silver Creek. That fire is 200 hectares in size, and the BC Wildfire Service has it listed as “under control”.

A province-wide state of emergency has been extended until September 1st.

Fires merge in Cariboo

A number of small fires have now merged into one, creating BC’s largest fire. The Plateau fire is estimated to be 438,000 hectares in size. This fire is north of Highway 20, in the Cariboo. It’s 60 kilometres west of Quesnel and 60 kilometres north-west of Williams Lake.

A cold front is expected to increase winds and the potential for thunderstorms this week. It’s unclear how much rain the front will bring.
