Some familiar names in the run for Vancouver city council and school board

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Friday was the cut off day for people to submit their names to run in two by-elections in Vancouver this fall.

Twenty-eight people are running for vacancies at city council and on the school board.

Nine people are running for the vacant seat on Vancouver city council.

A by-election is needed to fill the position left by Geoff Meggs, who departed to work for the provincial NDP government.

The NPA, Vision and Green Parties have candidates in the running. COPE is not running a candidate.

Two names on the council ballot should be familiar with city watchers. Judy Graves once worked as the city’s homeless advocate. She’s running for the OneCity party. Jean Swanson is running as an independent. She also is a well-known figure in the anti-poverty movement.
