New NDP government to outline its first budget today

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – It’s budget day in Victoria — a chance to find out how the new NDP government will spend your tax dollars in the coming months.

The first real hint that this financial plan likely won’t include significant policy changes is the repeated use of the term “budget update” from Finance Minister Carole James.

James has downplayed expectations in the lead-up to today, suggesting we all have to wait until February to get a complete budget for the next fiscal year.

One area where we could see immediate action is the $400 annual “renters’ rebate.” Premier John Horgan told reporters last week that that election promise will be addressed in some way in this budget.

But, regardless of your view of this government, the expectation is that February is when we will see major changes implemented.

NEWS 1130’s Martin MacMahon will have a complete look at the budget once it’s out this afternoon. Our Lasia Kretzel will also be covering the fiscal statement from the Legislature in Victoria.
