Metro Vancouver water restrictions lifted

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It’s been a few months, but watering restrictions across Metro Vancouver are officially lifted as of today.

“This year we did pretty darn good. We learned from 2015,” says Metro Vancouver Utilities Chair Darrell Mussatto who adds reservoir levels are right on target.

“Overall, we have gotten the message. People are reducing their consumption, which is a good thing. However, there are always a few that don’t get that message and we have to continue to reach out to them.”

Next year Metro Vancouver aims to start the restrictions earlier and to reduce the number of days you’re allowed to water your lawn by one.

This year lawn watering restrictions were put into place on May 15th and remained at Stage 1 throughout the entire summer. “Single family homeowners, in particular, really stepped up their water-wise lawn care, and only watered once or twice a week, or let their lawns go brown,” adds Mussatto.

Earlier this year, the regional agency also approved a new drinking water conservation plan for 2018. There will be additional water restrictions for businesses, school yards, golf courses and public parks, will also take effect.

“We need to be responsive to climate change and, in anticipation of future dry spells, we have revised our regulations to better ensure we have enough water for everyone’s needs,” explains Mussatto. “Over the next decade we’re investing $3.5 billion into upgrading and expanding our water system – but it is crucial that everyone does their part by conserving water.”

Stage 1 water restrictions will begin May 1st, 2018.
