Protest today against Kinder Morgan construction

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – The work has already begun on the controversial Trans Mountain pipeline expansion and a flotilla will try and stop that work.

It starts at Cates Park in North Vancouver.

Tegan Hansen is the co-founder of Sea Wolves, one of the groups involved in the protest.

She says this is about telling Kinder Morgan that the project is not welcome in Burnaby.

“We’re going to be sending a powerful message to Kinder Morgan that their project doesn’t have approval and even though they’re scheduled to start construction on their terminal in Burnaby this week, there are many places where they are not allowed to start construction yet.”

She believes the project needs to be halted. “We don’t think that it’s appropriate that they are starting construction on a project that is being challenged in court.”

The protest will be on the water and Hansen says there is a reason for that. “We really looked to our neighbours down south. A couple of years ago they were able to blockade a huge oil rig heading to the Arctic that Shell was sending up there, just in kayaks.”

The protest is set to get underway at 11 a.m.

Earlier this week Kinder Morgan applied to bypass the City of Burnaby who the company says is unjustly delaying the project that has already been approved by the Federal Government and the National Energy Board.
