Surrey examines viability of two new stadiums

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – The City of Surrey is looking into the possibility of allowing the construction of two new stadiums.

Investment banker Inde Sumal wants to build a 10,000 seater hockey arena in Bridgeview near the Scott Road SkyTrain station, and there are talks about a potential soccer stadium on city land as well.

“So in the outdoor facility, we have issued a request for expressions of interest,” explains Surrey City Councillor Bruce Hayne. “That is closing mid-November for those expressions of interest to come in.”

He says the city would contribute land for either project if eventually approved, but wouldn’t subsidize pro teams beyond that. Hayne believes the city could use a new entertainment venue.

“The province could come in, the feds could come in, certainly the private sector has a big role to play there so. But we would come in with programming, we’d come in with land and so on. So there’s a lot that the city has to offer here, but we would need others to come along to the table.”
