Could tonight be last time we turn our clocks back?

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – A few weeks after confirming his mind is more open to getting rid of Daylight Saving Time in BC, the Premier now says he’s seriously considering it.

That’s a big shift from September when John Horgan was in favour of keeping it.

Most British Columbians must turn their clocks back an hour to return to Standard Time at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday.

During a media availability in Victoria this week, Horgan was asked again about the switch proposed by delegates at this year’s Union of BC Municipalities convention.

“I asked people to send me an email and they’ve been doing that. Many thousands of people have sent me emails and they’ve expressed their point of view. I expect I’m going to continue to get emails on that.”

He says it’s obviously too late to make the switch this weekend, but most people are overwhelmingly in favour of taking Saskatchewan’s lead and staying on standard time year-round.

The East Kootenay region and northeastern BC also don’t change clocks twice a year.

Alberta’s government recently considered making the switch, but the idea was rejected last week.

Horgan says many British Columbians have also been asking him to sync up the annual Family Day holiday with the rest of Canada.

“The timing of the holiday in February are two issues I wasn’t expecting to have as much interest in, but I’m excited that British Columbians are sending me their points of view on those and we’ll make decisions on those when it’s appropriate.”

He’s in favour of moving Family Day to the third Monday of the month instead of the second.
