Windy, rainy weather ahead for Lower Mainland

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Environment Canada says it’s going to get very windy on Monday as a low pressure system that’s over the Pacific will intensify and approach the coast.

A wind warning has been issued for much of our region, with the low pressure system expected to spread strong winds across Vancouver Island and parts of the Lower Mainland on Monday morning.

An updated wind warning from Environment Canada includes all of Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley out to Abbotsford, and parts of Vancouver Island.

The winds are expected to peak late Monday morning or early in the afternoon.

“The winds speeds are expected to get up to near 70 kilometres an hour at that time,” Environment Canada forecaster Greg Pearce says.

“I would expect to see some power outages in the windier areas, there’s likely going to be some tree branches come down. The other thing to be aware of is if you’re travelling. It’s the holiday and ferry cancellations are likely to occur if you’re trying to travel over to Vancouver Island,” Pearce says.

There’s also a rainfall warning for Howe Sound.

Pearce says it’s going to remain breezy for the rest of the week.

“We’re into a really stormy pattern, we’ve got another big low coming down from the Gulf of Alaska.”
