Sports Page set for BC Sports Hall of Fame exhibit

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Sports Page hasn’t graced the airwaves in over a decade, but local sports fans can’t get it out of their heads.

Before YouTube, before web streaming, before those gifs on Twitter — if you wanted to see the plays of the night, and maybe get a laugh or two, you had to watch Sports Page.

It was a highlights show that put Vancouver teams first and always told the sports stories of the day with a healthy dash of humour, airing first on CKVU, starting in the 1970s, before finishing its run on CHEK-TV.

Now you’ll have a chance to sit at a replica of the Sports Page anchor desk, check out some of the show’s memorabilia and participate in trivia games at an exhibit at the BC Sports Hall of Fame.

“I think it put Vancouver sports teams first at a time where mainstream sports shows didn’t do that,” says Scott Rintoul with Sportsnet 650, who worked on the show. “Also, you had so many unique personalities that have gone on to bigger and better things, and those personalities made the show work.”

Rintoul adds it really was a show driven by those big personalities. “They were guys who cared about it, they were funny, they had a good time with sports, but they also delivered so many important stories and so many important angles for the Vancouver sports fan that they weren’t getting anywhere else.”

The exhibit opens on December 9th.
