Fatal crash forces complete closure of Burrard Bridge

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A fiery overnight crash on the Burrard Bridge killed one person and shut down a major Vancouver traffic artery for the entire morning commute.

Vancouver Police say an Audi R8 sports car was travelling north on the bridge when the driver lost control, crossed the centre line and collided with a taxi heading south. The crash caused at least one of the cars to burst into flames. The driver of the Audi died at the scene while the 68-year-old taxi driver and his passenger, in his 30s, were taken to the hospital in a serious condition.

First responders are praising a passing driver who stopped to help immediately after the crash.

“I can say that speed was definitely a factor in this accident,” says Sergeant Jason Robillard.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision to call the VPD at 604-717-3012.

The bridge reopened to traffic just after 1:00 this afternoon.

This is Vancouver’s 11th fatal collision of 2017.
