White Christmas expected with several centimetres of snow in some areas

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – If you were hoping to wake up on Christmas morning to snow on the ground — your wish is about to come true.

Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for the South Coast with snowfall totals expected to hit 10 centimetres in some areas.

If you are celebrating the holidays on Vancouver Island, brace yourself because that’s where snow is expected to develop during the day on Sunday before the arctic air shifts to the mainland by the evening. The agency thinks anywhere between five to 10 centimetres will fall over the island, while here on the Lower Mainland, it will look more like two to four centimetres.

And that’s not all as that arctic ridge of high pressure will stick around for the week which means daytime highs will hover around the freezing mark.

If you have to drive on Sunday or Monday, it’s recommended your car be winter-ready, slow down and give yourself extra time to get where you need to go. The roads are expected to be incredibly slick.
