Police, ICBC warn you to plan a ride home on New Year’s

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It’s a problem every year on the roads; impaired drivers getting busted behind the wheel during the holiday season.

This year, as we wait for the possibility of ride-hailing in this province, a couple of local agencies need you to be responsible in hopes of lowering the number of people who die on local roads.

Which simply means plan a ride ahead.

Take a cab, transit, spend the night, have a designated driver or just don’t drink.

Joanna Linsangan with ICBC wishes they didn’t have to keep repeating the same message — but they do. “People know that drunk driving is a bad thing, yet, there are still people who are out there who think it’s OK.”

CounterAttack has been place for decades but she adds the number of crashes involving drunk driving hasn’t really gone down. “We’ve had CounterAttack for 40 years now and I would say that yes, it has improved [but] the number of crashes involving drunk driving hasn’t been reduced, it’s still up there. It remains as one of the top contributing factors of fatalities on BC’s roads.”

The other two main factors being distracted driving and speed.

ICBC statistics show every year on New Year’s Eve, an average of 120 people are injured in 410 crashes on the Lower Mainland.

Ride-hailing in this province is still being studied by the BC NDP and the province’s transportation minister says it wouldn’t be implemented anytime before spring of 2018.
