A hundred skiers stranded on chairlift for hours at resort in Agassiz

AGASSIZ (NEWS 1130) – It’s likely a ski outing these people won’t likely forget.

About 100 skiers and snowboarders had to be rescued off a chairlift at Sasquatch Mountain Resort yesterday morning.

A morning power outage hit the ski mountain in Agassiz — and the lifts were full.

“We got our ski patrol out there, as soon as we had word that we weren’t able to start it up,” says Shelby Lim, the resort’s sales and marketing director. “We went through all the possible backup procedures we had and just did everything we could to get everybody off the chair as quickly as possible.”

Lim says efforts were made to keep people warm while they waited to be rescued.

“The majority of the people were great… We gave everybody the refunds or free passes to come back other days. We had staff going up and down the lines of the chairlift and throwing hot chocolates up to people in thermoses.”

Ski patrol personnel helped rapel the skiers down from the stalled chair.

“There’s harnesses involved — all of them have harnesses — and then they’re lowered down,” explains Lim.

Everyone was rescued by about 1 p.m.
