‘Hazardous winter conditions’: storm warning continues for eastern Fraser Valley

HOPE (NEWS 1130) – You may want to consider postponing all non-essential travel if you plan on heading from the Valley into the interior.

That message from forecasters with Environment Canada as a winter storm warning is extended for the eastern part of the Fraser Valley.

While the special weather statement for the central part of the region –including Chilliwack– has ended, you’re still being reminded to slow down on the roads and take extra care.

“Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations,” an Environment Canada warning reads. “Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery.”

Some parts saw several centimeters of snow throughout Thursday and Friday, while other cities experienced more ice and sleet.

Hazardous winter conditions are expected for the roads east of Chilliwack, including more freezing rain mixed with snow.

These conditions are expected to change into rain Saturday morning when temperatures are forecast to rise.

If you do plan to be on the out of town highways, remember that weather conditions can change quickly at higher elevations. You must have the proper tires to be on certain routes.

A freezing rain warning is in effect for Highway 3 between Hope to Princeton on the Allison Pass, as well as for the Coquihalla between Hope and Merritt.

Forecasters warn of “significant ice build-up” because of the precipitation.
