Unsung Hero: Blind curling club manager goes above and beyond

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Congratulations to our Unsung Hero Carol Kent! Carol was nominated for the award by Linda Weber.

Here’s her story:

Our Vancouver Blind Curling club is comprised of 20 blind/visually impaired adults who reside throughout the lower mainland and who meet once a week at the Vancouver Curling Club, located at the Hillcrest Community Centre. This will be my 4th season with the curling club.

I travel in from Surrey with my handsome well trained male yellow lab guide dog Jeeves. Even though it takes us two hours of travel time, each way, two buses and a sky train ride, to get to the practices, I don’t consider it a hardship when I get so much enjoyment from my weekly outing. I have learned so much about the game of curling, but even more importantly, I am part of a group, where I can feel safe and accepted, and I can share experiences with my peers.

Carol has been tirelessly organizing the blind curling club for many years. She’s the glue who holds our club together, taking care of everything from, scheduling practices, handling the team finances, recruiting coaches, stepping in to coach, attending community events to recruit new curlers, arranging travel details for our out of town competitions, organizing catering for our Christmas and year end parties, keeping track of statistics for our awards presentations, providing rides to our members, ensuring we have a warm lunch before going onto the ice for our two hour practices, and a myriad of other tasks behind the scene that we don’t know about, but allow for the smooth running of our club.

It is Carol’s love of curling, her compassion and kindness, and her unselfish wish to give back to the community which is her only motivation for dedicating hours of her time to the success of our club. I can’t think of another person who is more deserving to be recognized as an Unsung Hero.

Alpine Credits is acknowledging Carol Kent with $500 to say thanks for all you do, and they’re also donating $1000 to the Ronald McDonald House Children’s Charity.
