BC Hydro tries to make it easier for you to pay your winter bills

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – This winter has been mild compared to the winter of 2016-2017 when, as you remember, it felt like the snow just wouldn’t stop falling. However, temperatures for the last couple of seasons have been frigid and that’s prompted the province’s utility service to help customers pay their bills.

Many people in BC are faced with the balancing act of managing their household finances and BC Hydro is looking to make things a little easier with the Winter Payment Plan.

After a successful pilot project last year, the power authority is once again giving British Columbians the option of spreading bill payments over a six-month period.

Mora Scott with BC Hydro explains how this works. “Customers can reach out to us and we’ll work with them to make individual payment arrangements that work best for them. So, timing and payment dates will vary for each customer based on the billing date and the number of months they select to spread their payments over, but they do have up to six months to pay.”

The winter billing period runs from Dec. 1, 2017 to Mar. 31, 2018.

“Last year and this year we’ve seen colder weather and we know that some customers are receiving higher than expected bills. We recognize some customers do need to manage their crossover [during] a longer period of time and the Winter Payment Plan really helps them with that.”

Scott adds you can call Hydro and set this up until the end of March.

More than 4,000 customers signed up for the Winter Payment plan last year. She says another option to keep bills manageable is the equal payment plan where they’ll take your usage from the last year and divide it into equal monthly payments.
