NDP plan to replace Pattullo Bridge within five years

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – Today’s Throne Speech included a promise to replace the Pattullo Bridge within five years.

It’s the only item from the speech with a more concrete plan ahead of the budget next week. Premier John Horgan says the NDP has alotted funding for the bridge replacement in the financial outlook.

“Because it is at the end of its life and that will also require some negotiation because currently Pattullo is not a provincial asset. It’s a TransLink asset.”

Horgan adds his government fully supports Metro Vancouver’s ten-year transit plan.

“We highlighted the Pattullo because it’s unique –in that it is not a provincial asset. It’s a TransLink asset and we’re working on how we can get to work on that as quickly as possible.”

The bridge linking Surrey with New Westminster is one of three major projects awaiting funding from other partners. The other two are the Millennium SkyTrain extension along Vancouver’s Broadway corridor and Surrey’s light rail line.
