Michelle Obama inspires young women at first Vancouver appearance

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Beware of the pitfalls of social media. That message was delivered today by former US First Lady Michelle Obama during her first visit to Vancouver.

Obama was at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre for the first of two sold-out appearances. Her suggestion to “not tweet crap” might explain why everyone inside had to turn off their phones and couldn’t record any audio.

Harveen Khinda, a student from Panorama Ridge Secondary in Surrey, says Obama’s comments about the dangers of social media resonated with her. “To stay away from social media, from all the toxic things that are happening out there in the world, and be more careful about the things that are happening out there.”

Kaitlyn Wall of Surrey is one of the many other young women who left feeling inspired.

“I feel like a lot of people our age and –not just our age– just don’t really think about what they’re posting,” she tells NEWS 1130. “They just kind of post it for the likes and the comments –trying to please everybody else when you kind of need to take a minute and think about what you’re doing.”

Wall and Khinda were two of more than 300 students in the crowd who also heard Obama talk about the importance of education and leading from hope instead of fear.

She made no mention of current US President Donald Trump, but the crowd laughed when she talked about the need to think before you tweet.
