BC bars set to benefit from prime time women’s hockey final

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – One of the greatest rivalries in women’s sports will renew itself tonight when Canada’s Olympic hockey team plays for gold against the Americans in Pyeongchang.

And for once, you won’t have to stay up all night to watch it live. Puck drop is scheduled for 8:10 p.m. Pacific Time.

It’s a rare opportunity during these winter games in South Korea for bars to cash in on a live event, given the 17-hour time difference.

“It’s very exciting, this is probably the first break we’ve had for all these Olympics,” says Ian Tostenson, president and CEO of the BC Restaurant and Food Services Association.

“Coming on the heels of the gold medal in figure skating, I think we’ve piqued our interest here, so this will be great.”

Canada is going for its fifth-straight Olympic title, but the Americans will be looking for revenge after a stunning upset at the 2014 games in Sochi. Team captain Marie-Philip Poulin scored two late goals to give Canada a 3-2 overtime win.

Canada also defeated the Americans 2-1 in the preliminary round in Pyeongchang, but the US outshot Canada 45-23.

“I think you often like to say, ‘It comes down to who wants it more,'” says Team Canada centre Brianne Jenner, who will be playing in her second Olympic final. “There’s no question that both teams want this as bad as possible.”

The Canadian men’s hockey team nipped Finland 1-0 to advance to a semifinal showdown with upstart Germany. A win Friday would move the men into the gold medal game while a loss would relegate them to playing for bronze.
